Although there is information limited on the origin of the city, knows that the city was founded by Eumenes II, named that it after Bergama’ mythical founder of s, Hurts (the wife of Telephos). It was an important center during the Roman and Byzantine periods, and was also a center of the Christianity from century IV.

Principal Remnants - Main Street and Doors

The main street colonnaded, 1km in length, divides the city in two sections from an end the other. In both ends they are the monumental doors outside Byzantine embankments because the enormous sections of the doors were constructed during the Roman era. In the Byzantine door of the south, dating from 5 A.C., is epitafio dedicated to Dominatian emperor. The northern Byzantine door, dating from the same period, is in the joint between the way and embankments.

Ramparts

The city was surrounded with the walls around the north, this and to the south, in century V A.C. 24 square towers were added, but the majority of these has collapsed since then. Of the four entrances, two are the monumental doors and the other two are small.

Great Turkish Bath Complex

Now the part of the museum of Pamukkale, the disposition of the Roman baths is typical to that was. A wide patio is in the entrance, through which it works with a rectangular area with the great corridors of any side. There is evidence that suggests interior’ the enormous walls of s were covered with marble. In the north and the south of the main complex, they are two main corridors essentially used for the deprived use of the emperor, and for the ceremonies. The rest of the baths date from century II A.C., and the area now is covered with marble. A great part of the baths is at the moment in exhibiton in the museum of Pamukkale

Apollion Temple

Near the museum, they are the foundations of the temple, constructed in the means of the plutonium and dedicated to Pluto, God of the earthly world. Still it emits mortal poison gases and in front of the temple, a grid been has installed on the underground entrance to the means to warn inquisitive visitors. It was the site of an old religious cave, where Apolo found the goddess of the mother of Cybele. It suggests her descended in the cave without being affected by the toxic smoke. The parts superiors of the temple date from century III, and are accessible through wide stairs.

Theatre

The Roman theater recovered data of century II, and the relevaciones of the made building of the stage and are in exceptionally good conditions. The construction began in 62 A.D of Flavius, two years after a great earthquake, and was finished in 206 A.D. It around had once a capacity of 12,000, and adorned with the columns and the statues that were open pies during excavations. In the walls between frames you go-reliefs they are them of marble. The theater continues being the place for the annual international festival of the song of Pamukkale in June, during which 7000 spectators can be seated.

Churches

In center of city, the structures a cathedral, a church with the pillars are present. Two other churches that belong to the 6tos and 7mos centuries, with smaller chapels are placed in the northern end of the city.

Hierapolis Archeology Museum

The year 2008 was announced by the Pope Benedict XVI as the year of the St Pauls. As admits, holy Paul was born in the foot root, Mersin and spent a considerable part of its life there. Christianity was introduced to the foot root in the early period. Those, which became Christian only, were the members of in-been rooted Jewish community of the city. St Paul maintained, when a Jew ” mentioned; Saul of Fußwurzel” in the early period of his life admits to be. It was in n. Chr. 10 born. Its family lived in the foot root during the years, when social and economic restructuring constantly was and Roman nationality was sold to not-Roman people for the money. The family of Paul acquired Roman nationality in this way. The name of Saul, also the name of the first king of the Jews, was given Paul after its cutting. The Apostel took the names of Paulus after acquiring the Roman nationality.

That was general among the Jews in this time, in order to have a Jewish name and latin a name at the same time. The place, where the house of the St Pauls was put, is within the Kızılmurat neighbourhood of the foot root, which is full with old houses today. In the backyard of the house in the original position the place is good, where pilgrims stop drinking something water for the refreshment on their way after Jerusalem. St Paulus so, whose depth is 38 meters, and where water always exists both in summer and winter times, is worthwhile seeing.

The width of l’ church Saint Pierre formed d’ a natural cave is of 9,5, its 13 m depth and its length of 7m. This place where the first religious meetings took place, was changed into a Gothic church by the additional constructions carried out with the principal frontage by the Crusaders between the XII and XIIIème centuries. On the cave is reproduced of the vestiges of mosaics on the ceiling dating from 4th and 5th centuries after J. - C., as well as mural frescos. With l’ interior of l’ church there is also a marble statue of Saint-Pierre, of l’ water bénite thus qu’ a tunnel being used as fire exit in case d’ attacks at the community. Light of day enters l’ church through the high windows. It is necessary each year, in this cave declared in 1963 by the Pope Paul IV like place of pilgrimage for the Christians, a mass all on June 29 in which take part the priests and the community arriving of the surroundings as well as quatres corners of the world.
